It's impossible to be completely self-sufficient. We live in a web of humanity and influence and dependency. If we are being realistic, then we have to acknowledge that high integrity behavior, personal responsibility, and cooperation with others all have to be appropriately balanced. We do not live in a vacuum, nor should we want to. Give and take is the natural order of things, and a balance of give and take is the way to go.
I am fiercely independent and I am also a team player. Life requires of me that I be both.
